Slow Jam Fans Mourn the Loss of After 7’s Melvin Edmonds

After 7 Founding Member Passes at 65

It was an R&B group from early 90’s that exemplified class, sophistication, smoothness, and just plain, old fashioned love: After 7 gave us smashes like Can’t Stop, Ready or Not, Heat of the Moment and so many more. Today, the Slow Jams community mourns the loss of the group’s founder Melvin Edmonds.

Edmonds was an integral force of the grammy-nominated group, who sang alongside brother Kevon Edmonds and Keith Mitchell. Melvin’s son, Jason, joined the group later. Edmonds was 65.

The cause of death has yet to be reported, however Kevon acknowledged some years back that Melvin struggled with substance abuse problems over the years. (source: Black America Web)

The staff of Sunday Night Slow Jams extends our deepest condolences to the family, friends and fans of Melvin Edmonds all around the world. Speaking personally, After 7 was, and still is, one of my favorite R&B groups of all time. They were a part of my childhood, growing up as a teenager lost in love. Melvin and the group were a leader of the pack of incredible R&B groups that included artists like Tony! Toni! Toné!, Troop, Mint Condition, Surface and countless others. It was an era of romance, delicate lyrics, and smooth melodies; a modern New-Jack Slow Jams sound with old fashioned values. I’m deeply saddened by the loss of Melvin and will always cherish the memories of seeing After 7 live. I promise to keep the music and life of Melvin Edmonds alive through Sunday Night Slow Jams, always.
