Coisas Interessantes – R’s are H’s!

R’s are H’s!
Possibly one of the most interesting things about the português language is that they pronounce their “R’s” like our “H’s.” For example, they pronounce the name “Roberta” like “HO-berta.” You don’t listen to the “radio,” you listen to the “hadio.” And if you’re in a hurry, you don’t run “rapido,” you guessed it–you run “hapido,” even though they spell all those words with R’s.

Finally, one of the most amusing things I’ve ever heard, is when Brasileiros say American words–they tend to have to end most words with a vowel sound, so (and I’m not making this up) a “lap top” becomes a “lappy toppy,” “hip-hop” becomes “hippy-hoppy.” It’s downright cute!
