There are tribute shows… and then there’s MJ The Musical.
I caught the show during its five-night run at the San Diego Civic Theatre, and honestly, I walked out reminded why the music of Michael Jackson still hits generations the same way: instantly, emotionally, and with ridiculous energy.
From the opening moments, the crowd was locked in. The choreography was sharp, the band sounded massive, and the production somehow managed to recreate the magic of Michael Jackson without feeling like a simple impersonation act. It felt alive. The audience sang along to nearly every song — which, if you listen to Magic 92.5 in San Diego, makes perfect sense. Michael’s catalog has always been a core part of the soundtrack of our city.

As someone who spends his life around music and radio, I especially appreciated how the show reminded people just how deep MJ’s catalog really is. Everybody remembers the giant hits, but hearing songs woven into the story in a theatrical setting gave them a different kind of weight.
My colleague Xavier The X-Man from Magic 92.5 summed it up perfectly after the show:
“You don’t just watch MJ The Musical — you feel it. The music, the moves, the memories… it’s two and a half hours of goosebumps.”
Couldn’t have said it better myself.

If you grew up with Michael Jackson on the radio — whether it was on Magic 92.5, during Sunday Night Slow Jams, or blasting from somebody’s car stereo back in the day — this show taps directly into that nostalgia while still feeling fresh and modern.
And yes… the crowd absolutely lost its mind during “Billie Jean.”
