Slow Jams Special Volume 1: This is the REMIX!

Over the years, I’ve collected thousands of Slow Jams CDs.  From the various radio stations I’ve worked at, to scouring record stores across America–I’ve built up a pretty impressive collection of Slow Jams and they mean more to me than just about any other possession.  One of my most prized parts of this catalog are some of the fantastic and super rare remixes I’ve been able to find over the years.  Some came easy.  Others I’d only been able to get a hold of after years of tedious searching.

STUDIO CROPUntil today I’ve been very “protective” of these rare gems.  Maybe it’s because I didn’t want many other people to “own” these masterpieces too; maybe because I wanted to be the only DJ who featured these remixes on his show.  Whatever the reason, I realized that I was being selfish–and why not share these amazing tracks with my listeners: the people that love Slow Jams just like I do.

So here they are!  A collection of some of the best remixes ever made.  Some you may have heard on my show, others I have never broadcast on the radio.  Some are almost as good as the original.  Others you may agree are even better than the album version.  Either way, hit play, sit back, relax and enjoy a musical journey featuring the best (and rarest) Slow Jams remixes ever made.

This…is the REMIX!

Daytona Beach – 103.3 The Vibe!

Going to middle school in Central Florida, some of the fondest memories I have as a boy, were the days my Dad would take me to Daytona Beach.  He’d take me on his work sales calls across the state, for the first half of the day…and somehow we’d always end up at the beach…Daytona Beach.  Back then, you could park on the sand.  DAD BEACH 2We’d spend hours at the boardwalk and in the arcades.  This was just as good as Disneyland–just me and Pop, at the beach.

Today, I am super happy to be part of Daytona Beach’s 103.3FM The Vibe!  I hope you’ll tune in Sunday nights from 8PM to midnight for Sunday Night Slow Jams on 103.3 The Vibe in Daytona Beach.  Please listen in…and spread the word–let all your friends and family in Daytona Beach know that Sunday Night Slow Jams is here!

Shout out to DJ Tremble and the crew at 103.3 The Vibe for having me on their team.  See you soon!

The One Song That Changed My Life Forever

People often ask me how I got into “Slow Jams.”  It’s a long and drawn out story…for another time, when you’ve got about three hours.  But there was one defining moment.  So long ago.  It all started with a song.

I was 13 years old, growing up in L.A.  I grew up on my parents music (Jimmy Buffet, Johnny Mathis, a lot of oldies, etc.)  I had just recently started getting into “popular” Top 40 music.  I had no idea what a “Slow Jam” even was, or “Urban” music for that matter.  In Southern California I listened to the big Top 40 station out there, KIIS-FM.  Looking back, I remember the only songs I really liked came from the more “rhythmic” artists: Paul Abdul and Milli Vanilli were the first two albums I bought, on cassette!  There was a whole ‘nother world of R&B music out there waiting to be discovered–I just hadn’t found it yet.

Until the summer of 1990.

I had just moved from California to Orlando, Florida.  It was late at night by the time I finally got settled in.  I had just unpacked my precious radio.  At the time nothing I owned was more important to me than that little black GE alarm clock radio called the “Night Jammer.”  It was everything to me.  It kept me connected.

NIGHT JAMMERIts dial (yes, dial!) was still set to 102.7FM (the frequency of L.A.’s KIIS-FM).  I plugged it in and slid the switch to “on” to be greeted with static…apparently there was no radio station with the 102.7FM frequency in Central Florida.  So I had to find a new station.  Would I move the dial to the left…or to the right?  I didn’t realize this would be one of the most important and life-defining decisions I would ever make.  Right or left?

To the left I went, using my thumb to slowly move the dial, with careful precision, as to not miss anything.  You went to fast on one of those small radios, you could totally glide right past a good radio station.

Almost immediately I stopped in my tracks as I stumbled upon a song that immediately grabbed my attention.  I had never heard it before, but just hearing five seconds of this song–I knew I liked it.  And then about 20 seconds into the song, I knew I loved it.  The melody was beautiful, the voices were amazing, and the lyrics–well, magic.  They were literally speaking to me.  It was like the songwriter knew me and my experiences, and had crafted a song all about my life.  How could this be?  How did they get into my head???

“I can’t wait to get to school each day
And wait for you to pass my way
(And bells start to ring) and angels start to sing
Hey that’s the girl for you
So what are you gonna do
Hey little girl I love you so”

102 JAMZ JAMZOh, and then the next song was amazing too.  And the one after that.  And after that.  This happened the entire night.  After about every five or six songs that played, you heard a warm voice giving out dedications over rain and thunder sound effects.  The station was Orlando’s 102 Jamz.  The program was called “The Quiet Storm.”  And my life would never be the same.

The song was “All I Do Is Think About You,” by Troop.  It was that one song that set off a chain reaction of events in my life that continue to this day.  It was that very song, on that special night, that would change the course of my life.  The rest is history.

Sunday Night Slow Jams on 97.5 The Vibe!

R Dub! and Sunday Night Slow Jams Return to Tucson on 97.5 The Vibe!

A message from R Dub…

It’s so tough to put into words my love for Tucson.  When my family first arrived that fateful summer of 1992, my dreams starting coming true…immediately…all of them, one after another.  From my first high school girlfriend, to my first car (that I still have today!), to landing my first job in radio at 15 years old–there is something “magic” about this desert that just continued to bless me, and I have never forgotten how good Tucson was (and still is) to me.

I’m most grateful for YOU…my listeners and supporters, who have followed me and my little Slow Jams show from Community Radio Station KXCI where I stayed up until 6AM to host my very first show at 16 years old, before heading straight to class; to the ground-breaking Power 1490AM, which was one of the first radio stations to expose Tucson to Hip-Hop and R&B back in the 90s.  After a short stop at Tucson’s Power 97.5, which unfortunately was only on the air less than two years–I was honored to hit the “big leagues” and bring Sunday Night Slow Jams to 93.7 KRQ.  A few years later, after KRQ acquired its competitor, Hot 98.3, I moved there to continue the Tucson tradition of Sunday Night Slow Jams.  Even after self-syndicating the show and airing on over 100 radio stations every Sunday, anyone who knows me knows that Tucson is and always will be, the most important city to me.  Both professionally and personally.

So while it came to me as a shock when I was informed that the company I had been with for 18 years was dropping my show (Clear Channel Tucson)–I was actually super-excited and re-energized at the chance to join a radio station who really appreciates the music and understands Tucson’s love for both Classic Hip-Hop and Sunday Night Slow Jams.

I am proud to announce, that starting this Sunday (August 9th), Sunday Night Slow Jams can now be heard on its new home:  97.5 The Vibe!  The show will air every Sunday from 6PM-12M.  And now, we’ll play even MORE of the Slow Jam CLASSICS that you love!

You can count on our concert series returning too!  Slow Jams LIVE! will feature more of the back-in-the-day artists that you want to see live!

I’d like to thank Ken Kowalcek, Buzz Jackson, Herb Crowe, Keith Rosenblatt, Jay Michaels, Davey Morris, Mike McVay, Steve Mills, Carrie, Shannon, Porkchop, and EVERYONE at 97.5 The Vibe for all of their hospitality and for welcoming Sunday Night Slow Jams to 97.5 The Vibe, without missing a beat!

Most of all, I’d like to thank YOU, the listeners of Sunday Night Slow Jams–for supporting this show and its music–for decades now.  Since 1994, we’ve been on the air with Sunday Night Slow Jams and none of this would be possible without YOU!  Please know how thankful I am for your support, loyalty, and listenership.

ONE FAVOR:  Now that I am on a new station, I am humbly asking for you to, 1)  Make the SWITCH over to 97.5 The Vibe, and 2)  Please share the news!  Please let all your friends and family know that the new home for Sunday Night Slow Jams is 97.5 The Vibe.  Would you mind updating your facebook status, sending out a tweet, etc?  I’d really appreciate it.

Here’s to many, many more years of Sunday Night Slow Jams to come.  Lots of love, and many thanks!

Yours Truly, R Dub!

Now Playing: Snoop Dogg feat. Stevie Wonder “California Roll”

Snoop Dogg California Roll

It’s a special occasion and a rare event when Snoop drops a Slow Jam, and I’m super excited about this one.

The last Snoop joint we added to the Sunday Night Slow Jams playlist was a special Slow Jams mix of “Sensual Seduction,” and that was years ago!  So imagine our sheer delight when we first heard this one.  Columbia Records gave us “California Roll” about ten days before it was released to radio, and we had to sign a contract to keep it under wraps until its release date of May 5th.  I couldn’t wait to drop it on air.

And this all makes sense.  I mean, Snoop…he’s the definition of smooth.  Why hasn’t he released more smooth grooves like this?  Some of the best rappers’ greatest materials are Slow Jams: LL Cool J, Mellow Man Ace…have you checked out some of DJ Quik’s Slow Jam-esque album cuts.  Wow!  I just hope there’s more to come like this from Snoop.

Enjoy California Roll on Sunday Night Slow Jams, our weeknight Slow Jams show, and on our 24-hour All-Slow Jams iHeart Radio Channel.
